What Is the I Ching?

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is a classical Chinese text that describes change through images, relationships, and patterns. Its 64 hexagrams offer a language for thinking about situations in motion.

The basic building blocks

Yin and yang
Broken and unbroken lines express complementary qualities: receptive and active, open and firm, hidden and visible.
Eight trigrams
Three-line patterns represent elemental images such as water, fire, mountain, wind, and earth.
Sixty-four hexagrams
Two trigrams combine into a six-line figure. Each hexagram gives a situation a name, image, and direction for attention.

What does an I Ching draw do?

A card draw gives you a symbolic starting point for reflection. Instead of treating the result as a fixed prediction, ask what the image reveals about your assumptions, constraints, and next useful step.
